Farmers and agricultural professionals in eastern Germany have been given a practical demonstration of how tyre selection and inflation pressure can influence traction, soil impact, fuel consumption and operating costs.
The first Alliance Field Day in eastern Germany was held at Bismark-Schernikau in the Altmark region on 26 August, supported by Bohnenkamp SE and its partner AGRAVIS TECHNIK.
Four live demonstration stations showed how tyre performance changes according to machine load, operating speed and the task being carried out.
A sprayer fitted with Agriflex+ 354 VF tyres demonstrated the importance of adjusting pressure between road and field work. Alliance specialists explained that machine weight, axle loads and operating speed should be used with the tyre manufacturer’s load tables to establish the appropriate pressure.
Reducing pressure for field work allows the tyre to develop a longer footprint and distribute its load over a larger area. VF technology can carry the same load at up to 40% lower pressure than a conventional radial tyre of the same size, or carry up to 40% more load at the same pressure.
Matching pressure to traction
A second demonstration, using Agriflex+ 372 tyres, showed how inflation pressure affects pulling force.
Excessive pressure reduces the contact footprint, while insufficient pressure can cause the centre of the tread to collapse. The correct setting allows the tread to work more effectively across its width and transfer engine power into forward movement.
“Tire pressure is not a single setting that suits every operation,” says Gerrit Vinkers, field service manager Europe at Alliance. “It needs to reflect the axle load, operating speed and work being carried out.”
A prepared soil profile provided a visual demonstration of how tyre footprint and machine load affect the ground below the surface. The excavated profile showed the potential for deeper compaction, which can restrict root growth and affect the movement of air and water through the soil.
The final demonstration used Agriflex+ 373 VF tyres to examine the relationship between inflation pressure, wheel slip and fuel consumption. Excessive slip wastes engine power and fuel without producing equivalent forward movement.
Farmer and agricultural content creator Stefan Vogelsang also provided a practical perspective, emphasising the importance of correct tyre pressure and avoiding unnecessary ballast on large farms.
The event brought together Alliance tyre specialists, Bohnenkamp SE and AGRAVIS TECHNIK, with agricultural and transport tyres demonstrated alongside working machinery.
The field day forms part of a wider European programme designed to demonstrate tyre performance under working conditions and help farmers make more informed decisions about tyre specification, pressure and machine setup.
